Hotel Saint Augustine
Modern Tranquility Beside the Menil

Type: architectural hotel, design hotel
Style: colors, contemporary
Vibe: lively, residential

A Museum District Retreat

Situated on Museum Row and directly adjacent to the Menil Collection campus, Hotel Saint Augustine embodies Houston’s cultural heartbeat in built form. Designed by Texas firm Lake | Flato, the property unfolds across five two-storey buildings spread over 2.2 acres, linked by open-air bridges and terraces. The scale feels residential rather than monumental, with brick exteriors softened by projecting bays, screened porches, and a series of intimate gardens. Landscape architects Ten Eyck, working with The John Fairey Garden, cultivated a collection of native and rare plants that weave nature deeply into the experience.

Architecture & Interiors

This is not a tower, but a horizontal village—a calm counterpart to Houston’s vertical energy. Lake | Flato’s low-slung forms sit lightly on the land, their brickwork framing lush courtyards and green passages. Inside, Bunkhouse Hotels and Post Company collaborated on interiors that mix warmth with subtle whimsy. The design avoids heavy-handed art references, allowing textures, lighting, and crafted objects to become art in themselves. The result is a space that feels both homely and refined, with just enough playfulness to spark delight.

Rooms & Courtyard Living

Guestrooms carry the same balance of calm and character: pale woods, natural textiles, and thoughtful details that nod to Houston’s creative soul. Walk-out porches and screened balconies blur indoors with out, while oversized windows frame views of gardens or courtyards. At the heart of the property, a courtyard pool anchors the experience—a serene gathering place framed by greenery and the hotel’s interlocking brick facades.

Community & Culture

Dining here is firmly rooted in the neighborhood, with a restaurant channeling Houston’s diverse culinary heritage through a modern Gulf Coast lens. A cocktail bar and lounge flow into garden terraces, offering spaces to linger, socialize, or retreat. Artwork is intentionally minimal, keeping focus on the quiet, artful moments found in furniture, lighting, and the landscape itself.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Hotel Saint Augustine is Houston’s most thoughtful new retreat—a place where architecture, landscape, and interiors conspire to create serenity in the city’s cultural core. With its village-like scale, verdant courtyards, and design that whispers rather than shouts, it offers travelers a rare blend of intimacy, creativity, and calm. For those drawn to Houston’s art and design scene, it’s both a destination and a sanctuary.
