The Shanghai EDITION

The DNA

The Shanghai EDITION
Heritage Glamour Meets Contemporary Cool on the Bund

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● Ian Schrager’s signature blend of understated luxury and vibrant social energy, set inside two beautifully restored landmark buildings.
● Interiors by Neri&Hu that seamlessly unite Art Deco heritage with warm contemporary design, creating one of Shanghai’s most stylish gathering places.
● A destination in itself, with exceptional restaurants, rooftop bars, Punch Room, Electric Circus nightclub, and panoramic views over the Bund.

An Icon Reimagined

Standing just steps from the Bund, The Shanghai EDITION occupies the former Shanghai Power Company headquarters, paired with a contemporary tower that rises behind the historic façade. The contrast between old and new defines the hotel from the moment you arrive. Rather than treating the heritage building as a backdrop, Ian Schrager and Neri&Hu created a seamless dialogue between history and modernity, transforming the landmark into a lively social destination while preserving its architectural character. It feels unmistakably Shanghai—rooted in history yet constantly looking forward.

Design Made for Gathering

Like every EDITION hotel, the lobby is conceived as the heart of the experience rather than a formal reception. Rich walnut, natural stone, bronze details, oversized greenery, and soft lighting create an atmosphere that feels more like an elegant private residence than a luxury hotel. A spectacular seven-story mirrored wall reflects suspended gardens overhead, while the hotel’s signature bronze spiral staircase connects restaurants, lounges, rooftop terraces, and bars into one flowing social landscape. It’s sophisticated without feeling staged, luxurious without becoming formal.

Quiet Luxury Above the City

The 145 guestrooms offer a welcome contrast to the energy below. Light oak floors, white marble bathrooms, warm textiles, bespoke furniture, and floor-to-ceiling slanted windows create interiors that are calm, residential, and quietly elegant. Many rooms enjoy spectacular views across the Huangpu River and the Bund, while thoughtful details—from Le Labo amenities to custom furnishings—reinforce the EDITION philosophy of understated luxury.

Where Shanghai Comes to Socialize

Few hotels blur the line between hotel and destination as successfully as The Shanghai EDITION. The hotel houses an impressive collection of restaurants, cocktail bars, lounges, rooftop terraces, and nightlife venues. Jason Atherton’s Shanghai Tavern and HIYA bring international dining to the property, while the legendary Punch Room delivers intimate cocktails inspired by London’s private clubs. High above the city, ROOF offers panoramic skyline views, while Electric Circus continues the EDITION tradition of creating nightlife destinations that attract locals as much as hotel guests.

Designed for Modern Living

Beyond its restaurants and bars, the hotel offers beautifully designed wellness spaces, including a tranquil spa, a sculptural indoor pool carved from Pietra Serena stone, a state-of-the-art fitness studio, landscaped rooftop gardens, and numerous lounges designed for both work and relaxation. Every public space reflects Schrager’s belief that a hotel should function as a small city within the city—a place to meet, work, celebrate, unwind, and experience the destination without ever feeling the need to leave.

Why It Works

The Shanghai EDITION succeeds because it never relies on excess. Instead, it combines exceptional architecture, thoughtful interiors, outstanding food and nightlife, and genuine social energy into one effortlessly cool destination. It captures everything that makes modern Shanghai exciting while remaining warm, relaxed, and unmistakably EDITION—a hotel where luxury feels natural rather than performative.
