Designed Around the Landscape
Perched above the untouched coastline of Are Guling Bay, Somewhere Lombok feels entirely shaped by its surroundings. Created by sisters Claire and Valia Gontard, whose family roots stretch back to Lombok, the hotel reflects a deeply personal vision of authentic island hospitality. Twenty standalone villas cascade down the hillside, allowing every guest to experience uninterrupted views of the ocean, surrounding valleys, and rolling green hills. The scenery leads. The architecture follows.
Simple Forms, Rich Materials
The design embraces restraint with remarkable confidence. Architecture by Hong Kong-based SW Design combines clean geometric volumes, generous rooflines, exposed concrete, and signature timber screens that filter sunlight and encourage natural ventilation. Interiors by Eight Partnership and Studio Amal introduce woven baskets, handcrafted pottery, recycled textiles, rattan, and locally made furniture, creating spaces that feel contemporary while remaining unmistakably Indonesian. Craftsmanship brings warmth. Nature provides the decoration.
Private Villas Made for Slow Living
Every villa has been designed to maximise privacy and connection with the landscape. Open-plan layouts, floor-to-ceiling glazing, private plunge pools, and expansive terraces dissolve the boundary between indoors and outdoors. Soft neutral colours, tactile natural materials, and carefully selected photography celebrating Indonesia reinforce the calm, residential atmosphere throughout. Luxury feels uncomplicated. The views become part of every room.
A Resort That Gives Back
Sustainability is woven into every layer of the project. Working alongside Eco Mantra, the hotel incorporates passive cooling, rainwater harvesting, recycled water for irrigation, porous paving, waste management, and thoughtful land preservation. Local artisans produce much of the furniture, ceramics, textiles, and decorative objects, while the restaurant sources ingredients from nearby farmers and fishermen whenever possible. The community shapes the hotel. The hotel supports the community.
The Slower Side of Indonesia
Life at Somewhere Lombok unfolds naturally. Days begin overlooking the surf break at Are Guling Bay before drifting between the infinity pool, Indonesian fusion cuisine, spa treatments, and quiet moments beneath the palms. Beyond the hotel, Lombok offers uncrowded beaches, mountain landscapes, and a slower pace that feels increasingly rare in Southeast Asia. The island remains authentic. The experience feels deeply personal.
Why It Works
Somewhere Lombok succeeds because it never separates design from place. Contemporary architecture, responsible construction, local craftsmanship, and heartfelt hospitality combine to create a boutique retreat that feels both sophisticated and grounded. It is a hotel that captures Lombok’s quiet beauty without trying to change it—allowing the island itself to remain the true luxury.
