The Taikang Sanya – A Fortress of Serenity on Hainan’s Shore
Where Ancient Forms Meet Modern Design
Architectural Poetry by Neri&Hu
Inspired by China’s historic walled cities, Shanghai-based Neri&Hu Design and Research Office has crafted The Taikang Sanya into an immersive design experience—layered, intentional, and rooted in place. This is not just a beach resort—it’s a cultural journey rendered in masonry, wood, and water.
A Two-Tiered Masterpiece
The hotel unfolds in two architectural bands: a grounding, textural masonry base that holds the public spaces, and a sleek wooden structure floating above it, home to 343 peaceful guestrooms. Together, they create a powerful dialogue between permanence and lightness, tradition and elegance.
A Courtyard at the Heart
Two L-shaped buildings wrap around a serene water courtyard, forming the hotel’s quiet soul. The lobby opens directly onto this mirrored expanse, offering guests a moment of visual and emotional exhale—the gentle hush of water and garden simplicity in perfect balance.
Material Soul
The use of handmade clay bricks honors local craftsmanship, grounding the project in the tangible heritage of the region. Inside, the textures multiply: rich upholstery, handwoven rugs, and details inspired by the Li minority’s textile patterns add layers of cultural meaning.
Design with a Deep Pulse
Every corner of The Taikang Sanya whispers a story—from the interplay of shadow and breeze in the elevated guest wings to the tactility of natural surfaces underfoot. This is architecture as memory, hospitality as connection.
DNA Hotels Verdict
The Taikang Sanya doesn’t shout for attention—it stands with quiet conviction. For lovers of place-based design, poetic architecture, and cultural continuity, it’s a masterclass in how to build a modern hotel with soul. A tranquil Hainan escape that lingers long after check-out.
