The Chow Kit — Vintage Soul with Boutique Swagger
A moody, design-led sanctuary at the crossroads of Kuala Lumpur’s grit and glamour

Old-School Glamour Meets New-Gen Style

In a city long dominated by marble-clad lobbies and towering luxury hotels, The Chow Kit by the Ormond Group offers a bracingly fresh alternative. Named after its notorious yet vibrant neighbourhood—once KL’s red-light district, now an evolving hub of markets, mechanics, curry houses, and creative resurgence—the 113-room hotel embraces its surroundings with confidence. Designed by Brooklyn-based Studio Tack (now Post Company), its noir-ish interiors layer rich textures, deep colours, tufted banquettes, and vintage touches into a cinematic hideout that feels as KL as it does New York.

A Homegrown Vision, Internationally Sharpened

For the Ormond Group, this debut property signaled a new direction for Kuala Lumpur’s boutique scene: design-forward, experience-driven, and refreshingly free from five-star clichés. Studio Tack’s design respects the building’s context while blending tradition with modernity—red brick floors, white lanterns, Malaysian songket fabrics, brass accents, and curated art from local collaborators. Artifacts from Malay history—rattan tiffins, ceramic bowls, retro movie posters, antique newspaper prints—add texture and storytelling throughout the lobby and lounge.

Welcome to Your Den

Rooms range from compact Den rooms to the spacious Towkay Soh suites, each one distilling the hotel’s “luxury simplified” ethos. Expect hand-crafted teak bed frames, forest-green curtains, navy woven rugs, brushed brass lighting, and slate-grey bathrooms with monsoon showers. The design elevates essentials while stripping away the superfluous—no kettles or clutter, just refillable bottles and corridor water dispensers. Even the smallest rooms feel smart and intentional, their layouts refined, their textures warm, their mood unmistakably intimate.

Public Spaces with Neighbourhood Energy

The Chow Kit’s public areas borrow from Ace Hotel DNA: designed as living rooms for travellers and locals alike. Guests linger on deep sofas and tufted banquettes; conversations hum beneath warm lighting and contemporary Malaysian art. The rooftop yoga and meditation pavilion adds an unexpected moment of quiet above the city’s bustle—a serene counterpart to the surrounding chaos of the Chow Kit district.

Eat, Sip, and Stay Awhile

At the heart of the hotel is The Chow Kit Kitchen, serving vibrant, refined takes on Malaysian comfort dishes. Think tomato laksa soup, prawn and sticky rice rolls, and a standout Rendang Burger dressed with pickled root vegetables and shredded lime leaf. By night, the bar shifts into KL’s chic-meets-laidback rhythm: cocktails mixed with a wink, wines thoughtfully chosen, and a crowd that blends guests with local creatives. It’s the kind of place where a drink turns into a conversation, and a conversation into a late-night plan.

A Neighbourhood with Bite

Chow Kit remains one of Kuala Lumpur’s most authentic quarters—its sprawling wet market, bazaar alleys, and bustling food stalls a vivid contrast to the city’s polished districts. Staying here means tapping into KL’s raw energy and real stories. With the LRT and monorail a short walk away, and the city’s culinary icons at your doorstep, The Chow Kit sits perfectly at the intersection of accessibility and atmosphere.

Luxury, Simplified

The hotel’s design philosophy rejects excess: no massive flower arrangements, no marble grandeur, no unnecessary amenities. Instead, it delivers thoughtful materials, honest design, and warm service. Every space feels crafted without pretension, luxurious without shouting. It’s a masterclass in doing more with less—and doing it beautifully.

DNA Hotels Verdict

The Chow Kit is a landmark for a new era of Malaysian boutique hospitality—moody, modern, culturally rooted, and effortlessly cool. With its noir-tinted interiors, welcoming public spaces, smart rooms, and hyper-local ethos, it offers a stay that’s alive with character and grounded in place. For travelers seeking KL with substance, story, and style, The Chow Kit is the address.
