The Hoxton, Edinburgh

The DNA

The Hoxton, Edinburgh – Georgian Bones, Global Soul
Irreverent elegance meets local texture in the Scottish capital’s West End.

A Fresh Take on a Historic Setting

Some hotels echo their surroundings. The Hoxton, Edinburgh tunes them into something fresher. With its unmistakable mix of irreverence and elegance, The Hoxton makes its Scottish debut in Edinburgh’s West End, breathing bold new life into 11 Georgian-inspired townhouses. Spread across both sides of Grosvenor Street, it’s a hotel that blurs the line between historic formality and modern flair—and does so with a wink, a spritz, and a Murano chandelier.

A Lobby That Lives and Breathes

Step inside and you’re met not with stillness, but with rhythm. A Verity Woolley mural greets you at the door, followed by an amber-hued Murano glass chandelier that throws warm light across checkerboard tiles and dark-stained woods. From mid-century chairs to scalloped textiles, sisal rugs, and unlacquered brass, the lobby is layered, lived-in, and quietly theatrical.

This is not just a check-in space—it’s a meeting point, a reading corner, a wee dram hideout. The lobby bar, wrapped in perforated brass and peach tiles, glows by night, while by day, laptops hum and flat whites flow. Just off to the side? A five-seater screening room, plush in burgundy velvet, stocked with popcorn and curated by local cinephiles Cinetopia.

Rooms With Charm in the Details

Across its 214 rooms, The Hoxton Edinburgh is a masterclass in adaptive design. Whether you’re in a Snug Single, a Biggy Up, or one of the hotel’s three private Houses, the details sing: double-height sash windows, fluted raspberry headboards, two-toned sage walls, and pineapple coat hooks that add a note of Georgian eccentricity. Fixtures are brass, ceilings are high, and patterned rugs share space with neo-classical flourishes and modern geometric chandeliers. Bathrooms are tiled in vintage octagon-dot style, and some rooms feature skylights for stargazing from the tub. It’s all handled by AIME Studios, with a deft touch that celebrates the past without getting stuck in it.

Patatino: Sorrento, Served in Edinburgh

If Edinburgh had an Amalfi twin, it would live inside Patatino. The Hoxton’s trattoria-style restaurant brings a bright, irreverent take on Italian dining, inspired by Sorrento’s long lunches, with a menu that blends Scottish produce with Italian comfort. Think: arancini with slow-cooked brisket, deep-fried spaghetti squares, and pizza topped with ‘Nduja, haggis, jalapeño, and hot honey.

Design-wise, it’s a maximalist dream—Baroque fountains, mirror motifs, striped awnings, and velvet banquettes. Warm, ambient, and perfectly over-the-top, it’s the romantic cousin of the rowdy trattoria, where everything is just a little extra (in the best way).

Local Threads, Global Energy

As always, Hoxton makes sure its footprint feels local. The on-site Hox Gallery opens with work from Soo Burnell, showcasing cinematic Edinburgh through a lens of nostalgia and stillness. Meanwhile, Best Of, their in-house shop, stocks blankets from TBCo, illustrations by Max Machen, and tongue-in-cheek tees from Pieute—a love letter to the city’s indie scene. You’ll also find complimentary Brompton bikes, and mates’ rates for nearby yoga and spin studios, because wellness in Edinburgh should always include a hill climb and a soak.

DNA Hotels Verdict

The Hoxton Edinburgh nails what so few “design hotels” manage: irreverent elegance with local texture. It doesn’t just occupy Georgian townhouses—it plays with them, adding color, character, and contemporary spirit without ever losing the thread of place. For travelers who want style without stiffness, and hospitality with both edge and warmth, The Hoxton in the West End is a bold new chapter in Edinburgh’s ever-evolving story.
