Wayfinder Newport: Motel Nostalgia, Creative Energy, Coastal Cool
Mid-century wink, Rhode Island soul, summer-all-year atmosphere

A Throwback, Rebuilt for Now

Wayfinder Newport is the kind of place that takes the bones of a classic American motel and reimagines them for a new travel generation — playful, design-forward, budget-sane, full of personality. Over 1,000 pieces of Rhode Island art live inside these walls. The color palette is coastal, calm, beach-chic. And the lobby fireplace looks like a frame from a 1970s Venice Beach time capsule. The energy? Relaxed. Social. Local-first. Less “old guard Newport,” more “creative, casual Newport.”

A Community Hangout, Not a Stuffy Hotel

Wayfinder draws younger travelers, design lovers, and people who’d rather grab a Dark and Stormy on tap than uncork a dusty Bordeaux. The lobby is constantly alive: laptops + lattes by day, wine and lowlight by night. The pool scene is pure summer nostalgia — raw bar, snack shack, food trucks rotating in and out. It feels like a neighborhood hangout that just happens to have guest rooms attached.

Rooms with Beach House Spirit

The building was once a chain hotel — so the layouts are straightforward and spacious — but Wayfinder layers in warmth: wainscoting, plush Matouk throws, coastal hues, mini living spaces with wet bars in larger rooms. Bathrooms could use a bit more character, but local Shore Soap bath amenities rescue the vibe. The real narrative is the curation: this place is practically an art gallery for Rhode Island creatives.

Food & Drink that Punches Above Its Category

Little Clam — helmed by Hell’s Kitchen alum Antonio Wormley — is a standout. Contemporary New England coastal classics, from oyster po’boys to sticky toffee pudding. The Café handles coffee and grab-and-go for mornings. And yes — poolside dining is real dining here.

The Only Catch: You’ll Need Wheels

Wayfinder isn’t walkable to Newport’s main attractions — you’ll drive or Uber to pretty much everything. But parking is easy. And everything you actually want to see in Newport is still only 10–15 minutes away.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Wayfinder Newport is the new-wave Newport: unpretentious, stylish, local in spirit, social by design. A hotel that’s not trying to cosplay Gilded Age mansions — it’s here to show Newport’s next chapter. A motel reimagined for the art kids, the beach kids, the cool kids — and the ones who want to feel summer again, even if it’s not July.
