The DNA: What makes Kalesma Mykonos stand out from the island’s numerous luxury hotels is its forthright, open-eyed embrace of Mykonos’ soulful Cycladic heritage. The design team has drawn from the island’s vernacular not just in terms of architectural tropes such as the sculptural geometries of typical whitewashed volumes and timber pergolas but also in terms of its humble complexity, sculptural sensibility and communal dimension. The upper part of the site surrounds a ‘plateia’, or communal space, that is home to a series of pools and terrace dining. Interiors echo the rugged Mykonian landscape through a stripped down, monastic aesthetic of clean lines, an austere décor, and a palette of natural materials and earthy hues. By eschewing the typical blue-painted windows and doors for slim black frames, doing away with the whitewashed outlines traditionally applied to the paving stones, and introducing handcrafted furnishings that blend tradition with modernity provide an ideal natural canvas that allows the Aegean Sea and the Greek light to stand out.
Suite-Me-Up: Lower down the slope, the 25 suites plus 2 villas provide secluded and spacious accommodation along with private pools and patios, outdoor showers and freestanding bathtubs with sea views. Other amenities include king sized beds with Simmons mattresses, in-room bars with complimentary water, juices and soft drinks, a Nespresso coffee machine and a tablet controlling the mirror TV, sound system and “do not disturb” electronic system.
