A Building Reimagined

In central Taipei, The Blue doesn’t simply occupy an old building—it completely reinterprets one. Created as the flagship for Just Inn, the project transforms a commercial block dating from Taiwan’s White Terror era into a contemporary hotel where architecture becomes an emotional experience. Rather than erasing the building’s history, architect Tszwai So embraced its imperfections, allowing traces of the past to become part of an entirely new narrative. Wrapped in layers of deep blue glaze inspired by both Taipei’s urban heritage and the monochromatic works of Yves Klein, the façade quietly distinguishes itself from the surrounding streetscape.

Design That Begins with Emotion

The Blue was conceived around Emotionalism, an architectural philosophy developed by So that places atmosphere and human experience above rigid formalism. Instead of imposing a finished vision from the outset, the hotel evolved through a fluid design process in which existing materials were rediscovered, dismantled, and transformed into entirely new architectural elements. Throughout the hotel, repurposed steel, recycled glass, exposed concrete, and handcrafted interventions reveal a design language that is both experimental and deeply tactile. Nothing feels decorative for decoration’s sake.

An Art Gallery You Can Sleep In

The ground floor functions as far more than a reception area. Part gallery, part cultural platform, the lobby showcases works by more than fifty artists, architects, designers, and creative thinkers from around the world. Reclaimed building materials become artworks, installations emerge from construction waste, and architecture itself becomes part of the exhibition. Even the reception desk tells a story—it was created from the building’s original steel staircase, giving discarded structure an entirely new purpose.
