A Maritime Past, Reimagined for the Present
Set along the Yarra River on Melbourne’s historic North Wharf, 1 Hotel Melbourne brings new life to the city’s last remaining heritage goods shed, Goods Shed No. 5. The project folds the site’s maritime legacy into a contemporary vision of sustainable luxury, where old wharf structures, salvaged timber, and industrial relics are not erased but reworked into the fabric of the hotel itself.
Design Rooted in Restoration
This is a hotel shaped by material memory. More than 2,000 salvaged elements and 4,500 square meters of recycled timber have been woven throughout the property, including wood reclaimed from old railway bridges and historic wharfs. The asymmetrical façade reflects both the site’s layered past and its riverfront setting, with glazing that references the original shed panels below and the rippling Yarra above. Inside, split-faced granite, restored trusses, bluestone pavers, and reclaimed wood create spaces that feel tactile, grounded, and deeply connected to place.
Nature Woven Into the Experience
True to the 1 Hotels philosophy, biophilic design is not decoration here—it is the atmosphere. Thousands of plants are integrated throughout the hotel, softening its industrial framework and blurring the line between indoors and out. In the lobby, natural textures and restored architectural fragments are paired with a reception desk crafted from fallen trees, creating an arrival experience that feels at once elemental and calm.
Rooms with a Sense of Place
The 277 guestrooms, including 36 suites, continue the story in quieter form. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the river or the Melbourne skyline, while reclaimed timber headboards, moss-paneled doors, and room numbers etched into salvaged wharf wood subtly reference the site’s former life. The result is a series of rooms that feel warm, restful, and unmistakably tied to their setting.
DNA Hotels Verdict
1 Hotel Melbourne is more than a new luxury opening—it is a thoughtful act of regeneration. By merging heritage architecture, circular design principles, and a strong sense of wellness, it transforms a historic waterfront site into one of Melbourne’s most compelling stays. For travelers drawn to design with meaning, this is a hotel that proves sustainability can be both sophisticated and deeply atmospheric.
