The DNA

1 Hotel Melbourne – Melbourne, Australia
Where Industrial Heritage Meets Biophilic Luxury

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● A remarkable transformation of Melbourne’s last surviving heritage goods shed into a sustainable luxury hotel.
● Thousands of reclaimed materials and living plants create one of the most ambitious examples of biophilic hospitality in Australia.
● Proof that adaptive reuse can be every bit as luxurious as a new-build landmark.

A Waterfront Landmark Reborn

Along the banks of the Yarra River, on Melbourne’s historic North Wharf, 1 Hotel Melbourne breathes new life into one of the city’s most important industrial relics. At the heart of the project stands Goods Shed No. 5, the last surviving goods shed from what was once Melbourne’s busiest port. Rather than treating the building as an obstacle to redevelopment, the designers embraced its history, transforming it into the centrepiece of the hotel experience. The result feels distinctly Melbourne: creative, sustainable, and deeply connected to the city’s maritime past.

Design Rooted in Restoration

Few hotels tell their story through materials as convincingly as 1 Hotel Melbourne. More than 2,000 salvaged elements have been incorporated throughout the property, alongside over 4,500 square metres of reclaimed timber sourced from former railway bridges, wharfs, and industrial structures. Original steel trusses, bluestone pavers, timber beams, and historic architectural fragments remain visible throughout the hotel. Even the building’s striking asymmetrical façade reflects the site’s history. The lower glazing references the original goods shed below, while the upper sections mirror the movement of the Yarra River itself. Every material feels purposeful. Nothing feels decorative.

Nature as Architecture

Like all 1 Hotels, sustainability is not an add-on. It is the foundation of the entire experience. More than 7,000 plants have been integrated throughout the building, softening the industrial architecture and creating a sense of calm rarely associated with former port infrastructure. Greenery cascades from balconies, fills public spaces, and blurs the boundary between inside and outside. The arrival experience sets the tone immediately. A dramatic granite feature wall rises beside a reception desk crafted from fallen trees, while reclaimed timber furnishings and natural textures create an atmosphere that feels closer to a contemporary urban sanctuary than a luxury hotel lobby.

Rooms with a Story to Tell

The 277 guestrooms and 36 suites continue the narrative in a quieter, more intimate way. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of either the Yarra River or Melbourne’s skyline, while reclaimed timber headboards, preserved moss panels, and custom furnishings introduce warmth and texture. Room numbers are carved into salvaged wharf timber, complete with markings left behind by marine borers that once inhabited the wood. The spaces feel unmistakably Australian, yet remain true to the global 1 Hotels aesthetic of natural materials, neutral palettes, and restorative calm. Luxury here is subtle rather than showy.

Wellness by the Water

Wellbeing plays a central role in the hotel’s identity. The wellness floor includes an indoor swimming pool overlooking the city, alongside a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi-style spa, and the Bamford Wellness Spa. The Field House Gym combines state-of-the-art fitness facilities with yoga, meditation, and mindful movement programmes. The experience feels holistic rather than performative, designed to restore rather than impress. Much like the rest of the hotel, it prioritises how guests feel over how things look.

Melbourne on the Plate

The hotel’s food and beverage concepts continue its commitment to locality. Restaurants, cafés, and bars showcase seasonal ingredients sourced from Victorian farmers, producers, and artisans, while the wine programme highlights low-intervention Australian wines and local winemaking talent. The approach is refreshingly grounded. Rather than importing luxury, the hotel celebrates what already exists around it. It feels deeply connected to Melbourne’s food culture and creative identity.

A New Chapter for the Yarra

For generations, Melbourne’s relationship with the Yarra River has often been functional rather than emotional. 1 Hotel Melbourne invites guests to see the river differently. By combining heritage preservation, circular design principles, biophilic architecture, and contemporary hospitality, it transforms an industrial waterfront site into one of the city’s most compelling new destinations. The project succeeds because it doesn’t erase history. It allows history to become part of the experience. And in doing so, creates a hotel that feels both rooted in Melbourne’s past and perfectly aligned with its future.
