A Historic House with a Quiet New Soul
Behind Hotel âme’s neoclassical façade lies a world of remarkable calm. Set within a monumental townhouse dating from 1867, this intimate hotel was created by Angel Cheung-Kwok and Manfung Cheung as a deeply personal expression of their shared love for Japanese and Scandinavian design. Original staircases, stained glass, ornamental mouldings, and generous ceiling heights have been carefully preserved, while the interiors introduce a softer contemporary language rooted in simplicity, craftsmanship, and natural materials. The name âme means “soul.” It suits the hotel perfectly.
Japandi, Made Personal
The design is minimalist, but never impersonal. Warm limewashed walls, pale oak, linen curtains, ceramic objects, and carefully selected furniture create spaces that feel tactile and quietly comforting. Every object has been chosen with purpose, from the sculptural bathroom fittings to the bespoke oak beds and travertine tables. Rather than filling the rooms with decoration, the owners allow materials, light, and proportion to create the atmosphere. The result feels timeless rather than styled.
Fourteen Rooms, No Repetition
The building’s historic layout gives each of the 14 rooms its own character. Some sit beneath exposed attic beams, while others feature soaring ceilings, elaborate nineteenth-century cornices, or large windows overlooking the city. Selected suites include freestanding bathtubs, and the Garden Room opens onto a private terrace. Throughout, natural Coco-Mat mattresses, linen bedding, clay-plastered walls, and handcrafted ceramics create spaces designed for genuine rest. Nothing feels excessive. Nothing feels accidental.
Coffee, Ceramics, and Community
The ground-floor café is the social heart of Hotel âme. Local guests and visitors gather over Shokunin coffee, tea, pastries, and beautifully presented breakfasts served on ceramics handmade by co-owner Angel through her Studio Kurē practice. The space also functions as a carefully curated concept store, offering Japanese incense, design books, magazines, and many of the objects used throughout the hotel. A suspended cloud of flowers by Japanese floral stylist Yoko Negi adds a poetic focal point above the room. It’s a café, gallery, shop, and hotel lobby in one.
