ANIME A SUD – Casa Sabir: A Slice of Sicilian Charm
Where light, heritage, and design converge above Ortigia’s historic market.

An Ode to Sicilian Craft and Contemporary Vision

Perched on the first floor of a 1908 liberty-style palazzo overlooking Syracuse’s bustling Ortigia market, Casa Sabir is the perfect embodiment of the ANIME A SUD philosophy—a seamless conversation between memory and modernity. This design-led apartment, envisioned by its owner-architect, transforms historical architecture into a living artwork, where the past isn’t preserved behind glass but reimagined through the lens of contemporary minimalism. Here, every detail speaks in the language of Sicily—stone, light, air, and texture—crafted into an elegant narrative of renewal.

Where History Breathes Through Design

Step through the carved wooden doors, and Casa Sabir reveals its layered soul. The entryway’s polished concrete floor meets century-old maiolica tiles, setting the tone for what lies ahead: an interplay of old and new, raw and refined. To the left, a glass-fronted wine cellar anchors the space, its antique flooring of hand-painted ceramics serving as a visual time capsule. It’s both functional and poetic—a nod to the home’s heritage as a gathering place for flavor, conversation, and community. The living area, flooded with Mediterranean light, is an elegant composition of vintage finds, bespoke pieces, and modern icons. Sculptural lighting and soft neutral tones create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and architectural. Every piece, from the mid-century chairs to the artisanal textiles, tells a story of curation and care.

The Kitchen: A Stage for Sicilian Rituals

At the heart of the house lies the kitchen—a showpiece of design and function. A sleek steel island stands beneath towering windows that open onto the sounds and scents of the market below. The walls—revealed during restoration—display centuries-old fresco pigments in soft shades of ash, coral, and indigo, lending the space an ethereal, painterly quality. It’s a kitchen meant not just for cooking, but for celebration: of ingredients, of craftsmanship, and of the simple, communal act of sharing a meal.

A Bedroom Framed by Sky and Sea

The master suite is pure Sicilian poetry. A high, frescoed ceiling curves above a king-sized bed dressed in crisp linens, while the windows frame views of Ortigia’s rooftops and the Ionian Sea beyond. The en-suite bathroom juxtaposes rustic “pece” stone and sleek steel fixtures, merging warmth and coolness, the tactile and the modern. The mood here is tranquil, cinematic—an intimate space to slow down and listen to the rhythms of the island.

A Home with Soul

Casa Sabir is more than a holiday apartment—it’s a living gallery, a home where Sicilian culture, architecture, and contemporary design intersect in perfect equilibrium. From the ancient maiolica floors to the industrial steel kitchen, from the rediscovered wall paintings to the curated modern art, every gesture respects what was, while celebrating what is. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t shout for attention but holds it effortlessly, like a piece of music composed for quiet afternoons and golden light.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Casa Sabir is a masterclass in Sicilian restraint—a restoration that embraces imperfection, authenticity, and emotion. It captures the essence of Ortigia itself: sensual yet intellectual, historic yet alive. For design lovers, food devotees, and seekers of soulful stays, Casa Sabir is a contemporary Sicilian reverie—rooted in place, rich in story, and bathed in light.
