BAR10ZIMMER

The DNA

BAR10ZIMMER, Dornbirn, Austria
A beautifully restored townhouse where historic character, thoughtful design, and understated hospitality come together in the heart of Vorarlberg.

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● A sensitive transformation of a historic bakery and townhouse into one of Austria’s most quietly compelling boutique hotels.
● Minimalist interiors that prove luxury can be achieved through restraint rather than excess.
● An authentic connection to local life through its ground-floor bakery and central location in Dornbirn’s historic center.

A Historic Building Reimagined

Located on Dornbirn’s Marktstraße, BAR10ZIMMER occupies two interconnected historic buildings that once housed a bakery and café. Rather than reinventing the property entirely, the renovation focused on preserving its character while carefully adapting it for contemporary hospitality. The result feels remarkably natural. Original architectural elements remain visible throughout the building, allowing guests to sense its history without feeling trapped in nostalgia. The intervention is subtle and respectful, creating a hotel that feels as though it has always belonged here. It is less a conversion than a continuation of the building’s story.

The Beauty of Less

BAR10ZIMMER embraces a philosophy of reduction. Interiors are stripped back to essentials, allowing materials, craftsmanship, and light to take center stage. Raw timber floors, white walls, carefully chosen furnishings, and a complete absence of unnecessary decoration create an atmosphere of calm throughout the hotel. Nothing feels overly designed, yet every detail feels intentional. Objects collected from travels, contemporary artworks, and handcrafted pieces add personality without overwhelming the simplicity of the spaces. The result is warm minimalism at its most successful—comfortable, personal, and quietly sophisticated.

Ten Rooms, Ten Individual Stories

The hotel’s ten guestrooms are spread throughout the upper floors, each shaped by the quirks and irregularities of the historic structure. Rather than imposing uniformity, the design embraces these differences. Some rooms feature lower ceilings and intimate proportions, while others reveal generous rooflines and exposed architectural details. The attic suite offers the most spacious accommodation, but every room shares the same commitment to simplicity, comfort, and quality. Frette linens, Twils beds, Susanne Kaufmann amenities, and carefully selected furnishings elevate the experience without disrupting the hotel’s understated aesthetic. Televisions and minibars are intentionally absent, reinforcing the focus on slowing down and engaging with the surroundings.

A Living Ground Floor

Although the original bar that inspired the hotel’s name is no longer operating, the building’s social heart remains firmly intact. The ground floor is now home to Copain, a bakery and café that draws both locals and visitors throughout the day. Fresh pastries, artisan breads, coffee, and breakfast bring life to the space from morning onwards, creating an atmosphere that feels connected to the city rather than isolated from it. Guests naturally mingle with locals, adding a sense of authenticity that many boutique hotels strive for but rarely achieve. The experience feels less like staying in a hotel and more like temporarily becoming part of the neighborhood.

The Perfect Base for Exploring Four Countries

Dornbirn sits within the unique Vierländereck region, where Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein meet. This strategic location makes BAR10ZIMMER an ideal base for exploring a remarkable variety of landscapes and cultures. Lake Constance, the mountains of Vorarlberg, the historic streets of St. Gallen, and countless hiking and cycling routes are all within easy reach. Yet despite its convenient location, the hotel itself remains calm and grounded. After a day exploring the region, returning to BAR10ZIMMER feels like stepping back into a carefully crafted sanctuary.

Quiet Confidence

What makes BAR10ZIMMER memorable is not what it adds, but what it removes. By stripping away distractions and focusing on quality, comfort, and authenticity, it creates an experience that feels increasingly rare in contemporary hospitality. There is no spectacle here. No grand gestures. No unnecessary luxury. Instead, there is thoughtful architecture, genuine character, and an atmosphere that feels entirely comfortable in its own skin.

For Lovers of Design, Architecture, and Authentic Places

BAR10ZIMMER demonstrates how historic buildings can be thoughtfully adapted without losing their identity. Through careful restoration, intelligent design, and a commitment to simplicity, it transforms a former bakery and townhouse into a hotel that feels both timeless and contemporary. For travelers drawn to architecture, craftsmanship, and understated hospitality, it is exactly the kind of hidden gem worth discovering.
