A Townhouse Rewritten
At the edge of Dornbirn’s historic Marktstraße, BAR10ZIMMER stands as a careful act of revival. Once home to a bakery and café, this aging structure—spread across two interconnected houses—has been meticulously transformed into a boutique hotel that respects its past while embracing a refined, contemporary identity. The intervention is deliberate: not everything new, only what needed renewal. The result is a building that feels continuous rather than converted—its history still visible, now simply sharper, lighter, and more intentional.
Design Without Excess
BAR10ZIMMER operates on a philosophy of reduction. Interiors are stripped back to essentials—raw wooden floors, white furnishings, and a complete absence of plastic. Every object feels considered, often sourced from travels, giving the spaces a subtle, collected character rather than a curated one. Rooms are compact—inevitably, given the age of the structure—but never restrictive. Light materials and pale tones expand the perception of space, while details such as Frette linens, Twirl beds, and Susanne Kaufmann amenities quietly elevate the experience. There are no distractions here: no minibars, no default televisions. Only what matters.
Rooms That Respect the Building
Ten rooms are distributed almost intuitively across the upper floors, each shaped by the irregularities of the historic structure. Rather than forcing uniformity, the design embraces variation—low ceilings in some rooms, soaring gabled heights in others. The attic suite, with its generous volume, offers a contrasting spatial experience, but the essence remains consistent throughout: simplicity, comfort, and clarity. Artworks rotate across the rooms, ensuring the hotel is never entirely static—always subtly evolving.
A Social Ground Floor
The ground floor reclaims its original public function. What was once a bakery is now a modern bar—open, accessible, and integrated into the rhythm of the city. Since 2025, the space has been operated by Copain bakery, bringing coffee, breakfast, and a steady flow of locals into the building. It’s less a hotel facility and more a shared space—blurring the line between guest and passerby. The atmosphere remains daytime-focused: light, casual, and quietly social.
A Strategic Stillness
Dornbirn may not be the most obvious destination, but its position within the “Vierländereck”—where Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein converge—makes it an ideal base. From here, landscapes and cultures shift quickly: alpine hikes in Vorarlberg, boat rides on Lake Constance, or excursions to St. Gallen. BAR10ZIMMER doesn’t compete with these surroundings—it complements them, offering a calm, well-designed pause in between.
DNA Hotels Verdict
BAR10ZIMMER is a lesson in restraint and relevance. It doesn’t attempt to impress through scale or spectacle, but through clarity of intent. By preserving what mattered and removing what didn’t, it transforms a forgotten structure into a quietly compelling place to stay—one that feels both rooted and refreshingly precise. For travelers drawn to architecture, authenticity, and thoughtful design, this is exactly the kind of place worth seeking out.
