Barcelona’s Original Creative Hotel

Long before “lifestyle hotel” became an overused industry phrase, Casa Camper quietly defined what it could actually mean. Opened by the Mallorcan footwear brand Camper in the evolving Raval district, the hotel brought together design, hospitality, sustainability and genuine human warmth in a way that still feels remarkably fresh today.

The location reflects that same spirit. Raval remains one of Barcelona’s most layered neighborhoods — edgy, artistic, multicultural and constantly evolving. Tucked between Las Ramblas and MACBA, Casa Camper sits at the intersection of contemporary culture and old Barcelona street life, attracting a creative crowd of designers, architects, artists and curious travelers who prefer personality over polished convention.

Design with a Distinct Point of View

Created with Catalan designer Ferran Amat and graphic designer América Sánchez, Casa Camper embraces a bold visual identity that feels unmistakably tied to the Camper universe. The palette is unapologetically red, black and white; typography stretches across walls; playful graphics replace traditional hotel instructions.

Yet beneath the graphic confidence lies something surprisingly functional and calm. The minimalist interiors avoid decorative excess entirely. Furniture is simple and Shaker-inspired, lighting remains subdued and intimate, and the overall atmosphere balances urban energy with monastic restraint.

It is quirky without trying too hard — something many design hotels fail to achieve.

Rooms Designed Around Real Living

The guestrooms remain one of Casa Camper’s most unconventional ideas. Many rooms are split into two distinct spaces: a sleeping area on one side of the corridor and a private lounge opposite, complete with sofa, hammock, desk and balcony. Initially unusual, the concept quickly starts to make sense, creating a rare separation between rest and work, privacy and activity.

Other rooms integrate the lounge into a single open-plan layout, while many overlook the hotel’s lush vertical garden — an oasis of greenery that softens the dense urban surroundings.

Bathrooms continue the minimalist philosophy with strong rain showers, eco-friendly amenities and clean-lined functionality rather than spa-like excess.

Hospitality Without Formality

Casa Camper’s greatest luxury is not marble or spectacle, but generosity. The famous complimentary 24-hour “Tentempié” snack buffet has become part of the hotel’s identity: fresh sandwiches, salads, soups, fruit, coffee, soft drinks and small treats are available around the clock, all included for guests.

The rooftop terrace extends the relaxed atmosphere further, with an honesty bar, sun deck and open city views that feel more like a creative apartment building than a traditional hotel.

Service follows the same philosophy. Staff are warm, intuitive and deeply human — present without becoming performative. Regular guests return less for the rooms themselves than for the atmosphere of familiarity and ease that the hotel manages to create.

A Culinary Anchor in Raval

Food has always played a central role here. The hotel houses the Michelin-starred Dos Palillos by Albert Raurich, blending Japanese techniques with Spanish tapas culture in one of Barcelona’s most distinctive dining experiences.

Elsewhere, Dos Billares brings together cocktails, jazz and billiards in a more relaxed social setting that attracts both locals and guests, reinforcing Casa Camper’s role as part hotel, part neighborhood living room.

The DNA Hotels Verdict

Casa Camper remains one of Barcelona’s most original hotel concepts — not because it tries to impress, but because it stays completely true to itself. The design still feels fresh, the service genuinely thoughtful and the atmosphere refreshingly unmanufactured.

It will not appeal to travelers seeking conventional luxury or grand hotel theatrics. But for guests drawn to design, authenticity and hotels with actual personality, Casa Camper still feels quietly revolutionary more than twenty years later.
