Located at the western end of Mariahilfer Straße, close to Westbahnhof, it reflects a Vienna that feels younger, more creative, and constantly evolving. A Building with Memory
The hotel occupies a carefully restored Wilhelminian building that spent years hidden behind scaffolding before beginning its new life. Berlin-based design studio weStudio, led by Piotr Wiśniewski, resisted the temptation to erase the building’s imperfections. Instead, they celebrated them. Original columns stand alongside black lacquered steel beams. Terrazzo floors reference Vienna’s architectural heritage, while warm bubinga wood shelving wraps elegantly around the lobby fireplace. Throughout the public spaces, rounded forms soften the building’s historic geometry, creating interiors that feel welcoming rather than monumental. History isn’t restored here. It’s continued.
Cinematic Design
The Companion feels almost theatrical without becoming theatrical. Its interiors draw inspiration from 1970s European glamour, restrained Art Deco, and contemporary residential design. Deep colours, sculptural furniture, glossy surfaces, textured fabrics, and carefully choreographed lighting create spaces that reveal themselves gradually rather than demanding immediate attention. Every corner feels composed. Nothing feels staged. The atmosphere is confident, layered, and unmistakably Viennese.
Rooms with Individual Character
Historic buildings rarely produce identical rooms. The Companion embraces that advantage. Across 138 guestrooms, layouts vary naturally according to the original architecture. Some rooms feel intimate and cocoon-like, others unexpectedly generous, with softened corners, unusual proportions, and architectural quirks adding genuine individuality. Even the room categories reflect the hotel’s personality. Solo. Poet. Muse. Nest. The Balcony. And at the top of the collection sits the Velvet Suite—a two-level duplex overlooking Mariahilfer Straße, balancing dramatic volume with the comfort of a private apartment. Throughout, curved forms, tactile materials, saturated colours, and subtle retro references create rooms that feel designed for living rather than simply sleeping.
Where Vienna Meets the Mediterranean
Like the best neighbourhood hotels, The Companion was never intended exclusively for overnight guests. Its social heart sits on the ground floor. Boca, led by chef Lauryn Therin, brings a vibrant Mediterranean approach inspired by years spent at London’s Ottolenghi and Vienna’s NENI. The menu revolves around generous sharing plates, seasonal vegetables, fresh seafood, fragrant herbs, bright spices, and relaxed communal dining. It’s food designed for conversation. Not ceremony. Just beyond, Calypso offers an entirely different atmosphere. Opening towards the Gürtel, the intimate cocktail bar feels less like a hotel lounge than a neighbourhood speakeasy, drawing locals and travellers together over carefully crafted drinks and late-night conversations. The hotel never feels separate from the city. It participates in it.
