Else Kuala Lumpur

The DNA

Else Kuala Lumpur — A Meditative Sanctuary in a Storied Art Deco Landmark
A heritage giant reborn as one of the city’s most soulful urban retreats

An Art Deco Giant, Awake Again

Surrounded by gleaming new skyscrapers, Else Kuala Lumpur takes refuge in something far more compelling: the 1930s Lee Rubber Building, a landmark of Malaysia’s Art Deco era and once the tallest structure in the country. Now meticulously restored, it stands in the heart of Chinatown with two minimalist new floors hovering above the original façade—vertical fins, circular steel columns, and clean geometry subtly rewriting its future. What was once a tin smelting company, a wartime outpost, and later a beloved bookshop has been transformed into a sanctuary where history’s shadows are softened by light, craft, and calm.

Crafted by Locals, For the World

Else is a testament to Kuala Lumpur’s creative resurgence. Founders Justin Chen and Javier Perez partnered with Studio Bikin to reimagine the building’s interiors, preserving its layered past while infusing it with an emotionally grounded, tactile aesthetic. The décor draws on earth-toned materials—woven rattan, natural jute, local timber—and is enriched by regional artistry: handwoven pieces by Sarawakian tribes, sculptural lighting by Takeo Sugamata, custom rugs by Omar Khan, and rotating contemporary works from Malaysian artists like Fauzul Yusri and Fendy Zakri. The result is globally literate yet unmistakably local—an authentic narrative of place told through materials, craft, and collaboration.

A Refuge Above Chinatown’s Riot

Step past the threshold and Chinatown’s markets, neon, and noise fall away. The arrival lounge feels like a private salon—low-lit, layered, and serene. The hotel flows vertically, with residents ascending to quieter floors while communal spaces anchor the ground and fourth levels. This duality—chaos outside, quiet within—creates Else’s signature rhythm: a meditative counterpoint to one of Kuala Lumpur’s most energetic neighborhoods. Rooms are organized around stillness, each category named accordingly: Mantra, Sanctuary, Sutra. Calming palettes, handcrafted headboards, and natural textures invite lingering and introspection.

Rooms That Invite Presence and Pause

All rooms and suites embrace a warm, grounded aesthetic—soft lighting, earthy hues, tactile textiles, and sculptural furnishings that verge on art pieces. Many offer views toward old and new Kuala Lumpur, while the Else Suite on the top floor delivers the skyline panorama the city is known for, along with generous living space. The design encourages slowness: a chair that feels like a haute beanbag, layered rugs, brushed metal fixtures, handmade ceramics on the shelves. It’s the kind of hotel room that feels lived-in, not styled; personal, not performative.

Skyline Serenity: Pool, Pods, and Perspectives

The fourth-floor saltwater infinity pool is Else’s heart of calm. Set into a brick-lined terrace, it offers a cinematic sweep of Kuala Lumpur’s skyline—colonial relics, concrete towers, and neon edges all drifting across the horizon. Cabana daybeds invite leisurely afternoons, while sensory deprivation pods add an unexpected layer of escapism. The Pool House occasionally hosts live music and performance sets, turning the terrace into a floating lounge of light and sound.

Flavors That Belong to the Now

Else’s dining philosophy blends craft, honesty, and a touch of theatre. Raw Kitchen Hall serves communal, globally inspired plates—Asian and Latin flavors filtered through a modern Malaysian lens. It’s loud with conversation, open with intention, and beloved by the neighborhood. Yellow Fin Horse, driven by chef Jun Wong, focuses on seafood and small plates with Mediterranean accents. Smoky, elegant, and atmospheric, it’s equal parts listening lounge and culinary adventure. Natural wines, charismatic cocktails, and small-batch local ingredients shape the menus—a perfect reflection of KL’s cross-cultural energy.

A Calm Pulse in a Creative City

Else is not merely a hotel; it is a curated expression of Kuala Lumpur’s artistic present. Its thoughtful design honors craftsmanship that might otherwise fade, showcasing local creators and preserving traditional skills through contemporary interpretation. The spaces—quiet corridors, shaded terraces, sculptural bars—invite both connection and contemplation. Even the absence of a traditional spa is intentional; float pods and mindful movement replace menu-driven rituals, encouraging self-paced restoration.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Else Kuala Lumpur is heritage rewritten with tenderness—a 1930s Art Deco icon transformed into a contemporary sanctuary above Chinatown’s electric heartbeat. Minimalist yet warm, grounded yet forward-looking, it offers one of the city’s most contemplative boutique hotel experiences. For travelers seeking a stay shaped by creativity, calm, and a sense of rooted belonging, Else is Kuala Lumpur distilled into a beautifully quiet form.
