Eriro, Ehrwald – Alpine Silence Elevated to an Art Form
A design-led mountain sanctuary where architecture, nature, and wellbeing exist in perfect equilibrium

Type: architectural hotel, boutique hotel, design hotel, luxury hotel, adults-only hotel
Style: Alpine minimalism, natural materials, contemporary mountain design
Vibe: quiet, wellness, remote, slow living, no TV!

At the Edge of the Forest

Some hotels offer an escape. Eriro offers a disappearance. Perched at 1,550 meters above sea level in the Tyrolean Alps, surrounded by meadows, forests, and the dramatic peaks of the Zugspitze massif, Eriro feels wonderfully detached from modern life. Reached by gondola during the winter months and hidden high above the village of Ehrwald, the hotel occupies a location that seems deliberately chosen to slow the pulse and sharpen the senses. Its name derives from Old High German, meaning “at the entrance of the forest”—a fitting description for a place that feels like a threshold between civilization and wilderness. Here, mountain silence becomes a luxury in its own right.

Architecture That Emerges from the Landscape

Designed by architect Martin Gruber together with timber craftsman Andreas Mader, Eriro is less a building imposed upon the mountains than a structure grown from them. Local stone anchors the architecture to the earth, while timber sourced from nearby forests wraps the interiors in warmth, texture, and the subtle scent of resin. Large expanses of glass frame uninterrupted views of the surrounding peaks, turning nature into the hotel’s defining artwork. The design language is distinctly minimalist, yet never cold. Wool, linen, untreated wood, and handcrafted details create an atmosphere that feels deeply rooted in Alpine traditions while remaining resolutely contemporary. Nothing here feels decorative. Every material serves a purpose. Every space feels connected to the landscape beyond.

Nine Suites, No Distractions

With just nine suites, Eriro embraces intimacy over scale. Each accommodation is conceived as a private refuge where natural materials and craftsmanship take center stage. Handwoven Tyrolean textiles, bespoke timber furniture, and soft neutral tones create spaces that feel simultaneously luxurious and grounding. The bathrooms continue the dialogue with nature through freestanding bathtubs carved from single tree trunks, natural stone surfaces, and views that stretch directly into the surrounding mountains. Even the smallest details reinforce the hotel’s philosophy. Guests are invited to exchange shoes for hand-knitted lambswool socks upon arrival—a simple gesture that immediately shifts the pace and mindset of the stay. Luxury here is measured in comfort, quiet, and connection.

A Culinary Expression of the Alps

At Eriro, the landscape shapes not only the architecture but also the cuisine. Chef David Franken leads a culinary program built around radical locality. Ingredients come from a network of more than thirty organic Alpine producers, while many herbs, mushrooms, and plants are foraged directly from the surrounding mountains. The result is a dining experience that feels inseparable from its setting. Eight-course tasting menus celebrate wild game, mountain herbs, seasonal vegetables, and traditional preservation techniques, translating the flavors of the Alps into contemporary gastronomy. Every plate tells a story of altitude, seasonality, and place.

Wellness, Reconnected to Nature

Rather than importing wellness trends from elsewhere, Eriro looks inward—to the mountains themselves. The spa is built around elemental experiences: onsen-inspired baths overlooking alpine peaks, herbal saunas infused with local botanicals, and treatments using ingredients such as arnica and St. John’s wort harvested from the surrounding region. Guests are equally encouraged to explore wellness beyond the spa walls. Guided snowshoe hikes, forest walks, pottery workshops, and even traditional yodeling sessions create opportunities to reconnect with both landscape and local culture. It feels less like a wellness program and more like a return to simpler rhythms.

A Luxury of Absence

One of Eriro’s most radical qualities is what it chooses not to offer. There are no televisions. Technology recedes into the background. Artificial light is kept deliberately low. The focus remains firmly on the mountains, the forest, the weather, and the changing quality of light throughout the day. In a world increasingly defined by constant connection, Eriro creates space for something rarer: attention. Attention to place. Attention to craft. Attention to oneself.

The DNA Hotels Verdict

Eriro is one of the most compelling new mountain retreats in Europe—a hotel that understands that true luxury often lies in subtraction rather than addition. Through its thoughtful architecture, deeply local gastronomy, and profound connection to the Alpine landscape, it creates an experience that feels restorative on every level. Nothing is excessive, yet nothing feels missing. For travelers seeking silence, authenticity, and design that serves the landscape rather than competes with it, Eriro offers something increasingly rare: a chance to slow down completely and rediscover the beauty of simply being present.
