Opened in 1949 by Wayne and Helen Wilcox, it became a favorite hideaway for James Dean, Marilyn Monroe, and Bob Dylan, who famously worked on Blood on the Tracks while staying here in the mid-1970s. Today, following a sensitive restoration by Proper Hospitality together with owners Shaun Gilbert, Reem Al-Zahawi, and Sam Shendow, the property begins an entirely new chapter as Hotel June Malibu. Rather than reinventing its history, the renovation celebrates it, preserving the relaxed character that has always made this corner of Point Dume so special.
Mid-Century Simplicity Meets Coastal Ease
The design feels unmistakably Californian. Working from the building’s original mid-century architecture, the team retained restored concrete floors, exposed timber ceilings, and the intimate scale of the original bungalows, while introducing soft natural materials, custom furnishings, woven textures, and a restrained palette inspired by sand, driftwood, and the Pacific Ocean. Vintage black-and-white photographs by founder Wayne Wilcox hang throughout the property, quietly connecting today’s guests with Malibu’s creative past. The atmosphere is understated rather than luxurious—a place that feels lived in, comfortable, and completely at ease with its surroundings.
