Hotel de Milliano

The DNA

Hotel de Milliano, Breskens
A landmark of Dutch modernism where 1960s architecture, vintage design, and panoramic sea views define one of Zeeland’s most distinctive boutique stays.

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● One of the Netherlands’ finest examples of authentic 1960s modernist hotel architecture, built directly into the dunes overlooking the Westerschelde.
● Beautifully preserved mid-century interiors filled with original vintage furniture, generous natural light, and timeless design details.
● A wonderfully peaceful coastal retreat where architecture, landscape, and slow living come together in perfect harmony.

Modernism on the Dunes

Perched high on the dunes of Breskens, Hotel de Milliano has been quietly overlooking the Westerschelde since 1964. Designed by Zeeland architect Piet Götzen, whose work reflects the influence of the Rietveld tradition, the hotel remains remarkably faithful to its original vision. Rather than competing with the landscape, the architecture becomes part of it. Concrete forms, expansive glazing, and generous terraces frame uninterrupted views of the river, the North Sea, and Zeeland’s vast coastline. More than sixty years after opening, the building feels as relevant as ever—a rare example of Dutch coastal modernism preserved with remarkable integrity.

A Living Mid-Century Time Capsule

Stepping inside feels like entering a beautifully curated design collection. Authentic furniture from the 1960s and 1970s fills the spacious guestrooms, suites, and lounges, celebrating the optimism and clarity of post-war modernism. Clean lines, natural materials, vintage typography, and carefully preserved design classics create interiors that feel nostalgic without becoming museum pieces. Large windows flood every space with daylight, while the restrained palette allows the surrounding landscape to remain the true focal point. Everything encourages guests to slow down.

Rooms with Endless Horizons

Every room and suite is exceptionally spacious and opens onto a private balcony, while many feature dual-aspect terraces overlooking both the Westerschelde and the Zeeland countryside. The interiors embrace simplicity rather than excess. Original vintage furniture, uncluttered layouts, and soft natural light create spaces that invite reading, reflection, and complete relaxation. Outside, an ever-changing panorama unfolds. Cargo ships glide slowly toward Antwerp, tides reshape the coastline, and Zeeland’s famously expansive skies provide a constantly shifting backdrop.

Designed for Slow Living

Hotel de Milliano isn’t built around packed itineraries or endless facilities. Instead, it embraces the pleasures of doing very little. Morning walks across the beach, cycling through Zeeland’s quiet polders, watching the light change across the estuary, or simply sitting on your balcony become the rhythm of each day. The surrounding landscape—with its dunes, beaches, sea air, and open horizons—creates a natural sense of calm that perfectly complements the hotel’s understated design philosophy.

Zeeland’s Culinary Coast

While Hotel de Milliano intentionally has no restaurant, its location places guests in one of the Netherlands’ most exciting culinary regions. Breskens is renowned for its outstanding seafood and excellent restaurants, including Michelin-starred Spetters, overlooking the marina, and nearby De Kromme Watergang, where Chef Edwin Vinke has earned international acclaim for his innovative cuisine inspired by the Western Scheldt. Together with numerous harbour restaurants serving ultra-fresh North Sea fish and shellfish, the area offers exceptional dining just minutes from the hotel.

Why it Works

Hotel de Milliano is one of those rare places where architecture becomes part of the holiday itself. Its authentic modernist design, carefully preserved vintage interiors, and extraordinary dune-top setting create an atmosphere that feels increasingly difficult to find. Quiet, timeless, and effortlessly stylish, it remains one of the Netherlands’ most remarkable boutique hotels—and a true destination for lovers of mid-century design, coastal landscapes, and slow travel.
