Saving a Village, One Barn at a Time
There are hotel conversions, and then there is Montagne Alternative. High above Orsières in the tiny Valais hamlet of Commeire, founders Ludovic Orts and Benoît Greindl discovered a collection of old farm buildings slowly losing their purpose. Instead of constructing another Alpine resort, they began restoring what was already there. Barns, farmhouses and traditional mazots were carefully brought back to life, retaining their weathered timber and agricultural character while creating remarkably contemporary spaces inside. The result doesn’t really feel like a hotel. It feels like someone quietly revived a mountain village.
Ancient Outside, Minimalist Inside
The contrast is what makes Commeire special. From outside, the buildings remain unmistakably Alpine: dark timber façades, stone foundations and simple forms shaped by generations of mountain life. Step inside and the language changes. Reclaimed wood meets crisp contemporary furniture. Rough stone sits beside clean architectural lines. Vast picture windows cut through centuries-old structures, framing the surrounding mountains almost like enormous canvases. Decoration is deliberately restrained because very little could compete with what is outside. There are no televisions demanding attention and little technological clutter. Instead, fireplaces, tactile materials and extraordinary views establish the rhythm. It’s rustic, but never rustic-chic.
Sleep in a Piece of the Hamlet
Accommodation is spread through the restored buildings rather than concentrated inside one conventional hotel block. Rooms can be booked individually, while entire chalets and barns can also become private mountain homes for families, groups and retreats. Kitchens, fireplaces and generous communal living spaces make the larger houses particularly good for staying together rather than simply sleeping under the same roof. That distinction matters. Montagne Alternative was conceived around the idea of living differently in the mountains, even if only for a few days.
The Agora
At the centre of the community is The Agora, Montagne Alternative’s gathering place. It brings the scattered buildings together socially, providing space for eating, meeting and conversation. Breakfast focuses on local produce, while catering and half-board arrangements can be organised for groups and retreats. Long tables matter here more than formal dining rooms. It’s part of a philosophy that runs throughout Commeire: luxury isn’t necessarily about having more things. Sometimes it’s having the time and space to actually talk to the people you’re travelling with.
A Mountain Made for Switching Off
Commeire sits in the Pays du Saint-Bernard, surrounded by the kind of landscape that makes an elaborate activity programme rather unnecessary. In winter, ski touring, snowshoeing and winter walking begin virtually outside the door. The smaller ski areas of Vichères-Bavon, La Fouly and Champex-Lac are nearby, while Verbier and the vast 4 Vallées ski domain are within reach for bigger skiing days. When the snow disappears, the same landscape becomes hiking and mountain-biking territory. Wellness spaces and steam baths provide the quieter alternative, while the hamlet’s meeting rooms have made Montagne Alternative particularly suited to yoga retreats, creative gatherings and corporate escapes. The best activity, however, might simply be doing considerably less than usual.
Sustainability Before It Became Hotel Vocabulary
Preserving existing buildings was only the beginning. Montagne Alternative was conceived around a much broader environmental and social philosophy: reuse what already exists, work with local resources, minimise unnecessary consumption and create economic life in a tiny mountain community. That commitment ultimately made it the first small Swiss enterprise to achieve certified B Corporation status. Here sustainability isn’t presented as a collection of worthy initiatives added to a hotel afterwards. It is the reason the hotel exists in the first place. Montagne Alternative proves that sometimes the most progressive hotel is the one that barely looks like a hotel at all. By rescuing Commeire’s old barns rather than building something new, Ludovic Orts and Benoît Greindl created a wonderfully quiet collision of Alpine heritage and contemporary minimalism. Come for the mountains, reclaimed timber and extraordinary windows. Stay long enough and you may discover the real luxury: fewer distractions, fewer things and considerably more time.
