From 1964 Icon to Today’s Cool

Banff’s very first commercial motor hotel opened in 1964—a roadside classic designed for the golden age of road trips. Today, that same building has been reborn as Moxy Banff, winner of the 2025 Hospitality Design Award for Lifestyle Hotel, and one of the most spirited transformations in the Rockies. Designed by New York–based Workshop/APD, the hotel preserves its original Rundle stone walls, bold precast wings, and unmistakable mid-century silhouette, reimagining them for a new era of playful, design-forward travelers. This is retro revival done right—rooted in heritage, refreshed with attitude.

Bold Design, Banff Style

Inside, the hotel leans confidently into its mid-century bones: wood paneling, rugged stone textures, and a retro color palette that hits all the right warm, funky notes. Bar Moxy is the beating heart of the property—a social hub pulsing with après-ski energy, local DJs, spontaneous meetups, and enough flair to keep night owls circling back. Throughout the common spaces, local creativity shines: a circular mountain landscape by Calgary artist Kirsten Bollen anchors the lobby, while large abstract murals by Edmonton artist Tanya Klimp climb dramatically up the grand staircases.

Retro Rooms with Modern Comfort

Moxy Banff offers 109 guestrooms dressed in a frill-free, retro-ski aesthetic—think industrial lighting, bold accents, warm timber touches, and mountain views that steal focus. Room types range widely: toe-to-toe beds, double bunks for groups, kitchenettes for extended stays, and combinable lock-off suites for flexibility. Plush bedding and smart modular furniture keep things comfortable and practical—perfect for guests who see the hotel as part of the adventure, not just the endpoint.

Social Spaces for Every Kind of Traveler

Beyond the lobby’s energy, social spaces unfold in every direction. A year-round courtyard features two heated hot tubs for post-slope unwinding. A restored 1966 VW Kombi serves up all-day snacks, while Bar Moxy dishes out Alberta brisket poutine, Reubens, cocktails, and plenty of local spirit. The Voyager Room is a retro fever dream: more than 200 vinyl records, a vintage Klipsch Heritage sound system, hi-fi equipment from the 1970s, and a big screen for classic movie nights. A 24/7 ski, board, and bike locker room plus a Peloton-equipped fitness center round out the activity options.

A Banff Staple, Renewed With Purpose

Maintaining the bones of the 1964 structure wasn’t just the right design choice—it was a sustainability win, preserving Banff’s streetscape while reinvigorating the building for decades to come. As Brooke Christianson of Canalta Hotels notes, the redevelopment is both an investment in Alberta and a celebration of local talent. Moxy Banff feels native to Banff Avenue—historic, energetic, and full of stories—yet undeniably ready for the next generation of travelers.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Moxy Banff is retro Rockies revival with a pulse—equal parts ski-lodge nostalgia, mid-century flair, and modern playground energy. More than a place to crash, it’s a social basecamp for explorers who like their mountain stays bold, fun, and full of personality. In other words: a perfect collision of Banff heritage and Moxy attitude.
