From Municipal to Monumental
What was once the Broughton Municipal Building—a modest 1960s civic structure—is now Municipal Grand, a 44-room boutique hotel that feels anything but modest. Created by Midnight Auteur (the team behind Death & Co and The Ramble Hotel), this Savannah newcomer fuses midcentury Southern grit with lush tropical modernism, reimagining what a city hotel can be.
Design That Honors, Not Replicates
Designed by AAmp Studio, in collaboration with Lynch Associates Architects and Ward Architecture + Preservation, the hotel nods to Savannah’s underappreciated post-war modernism. Original elements—gray granite walls, white concrete framing, and blue mosaic tile—have been carefully preserved, then softened with curves, textures, and design notes inspired by Brazilian tropicalism and Finnish restraint.
Rooms That Reside, Not Just Rest
Each room opens through a rich green vestibule, passing through custom millwork thresholds into inviting spaces layered with banquettes, velvet headboards, and arched marble minibars. Bathrooms are tactile and transportive, with Moroccan tile, red marble vanities, and curved shower entries. Select rooms even boast private terraces overlooking Broughton Street—ideal for a golden-hour cocktail.
A Hotel Built Around the Bar
True to Midnight Auteur’s DNA, cocktail culture is the heartbeat here.
• Municipal Bar anchors the lobby with an atmosphere that feels like a Southern parlor, reimagined—open, lively, and endlessly magnetic.
• The Hot Eye, tucked underground, dials up the mood with late-night seduction.
• On the rooftop, the Sun Club pool and lounge pairs Savannah skyline views with tropical breeze and glass in hand.
DNA Hotels Verdict
Municipal Grand is a mood-first hotel, where design, hospitality, and cocktails are given equal weight. For travelers drawn to midcentury revival, cultural nuance, and a place where locals gather just as easily as guests, this Savannah standout delivers layered, lounge-worthy luxury—effortless, tactile, and deeply alive.
