From Lisbon to the Alentejo

Lisbon natives Gonçalo and Helena left the city in search of something quieter, but they did not want to give up the sense of refinement and design they were used to. What they created is neither a rustic farmhouse nor a polished resort. It sits somewhere more interesting in between. Set near São Teotónio, not far from the wild Alentejo coast, the property combines rural calm with a distinctly contemporary way of living.
A Monte Reimagined
The original farmhouse remains on the highest point of the estate and now serves as the owners’ home. Below it, architects Ivan de Sousa and Inês Antunes of [i]da arquitectos introduced a new guest wing that lies low against the slope. The intervention is deliberately quiet. Whitewashed walls, clean lines, shaded walkways, and long horizontal openings echo the language of traditional Alentejo architecture without copying it literally. Approached along a dirt track, the building reveals itself gradually. That slow arrival suits the place.
Architecture That Frames the Land
The guestrooms are arranged to face the surrounding countryside. Large glass openings pull cork trees, olive groves, dry grasses, and enormous skies into the interior, while private terraces extend each room outside. The palette remains restrained. Pale timber, linen, earthy tones, polished concrete, and simple furniture create spaces that feel calm rather than decorative. Nothing interrupts the view. The architecture is there to sharpen your awareness of the landscape, not distract from it.
A Retreat Designed for Real Life
Pé no Monte is minimalist, but not precious. That distinction matters. The rooms are carefully composed, yet the hotel remains relaxed enough for families, muddy shoes, long lunches, and children moving freely between the lawn and playground. The swimming pool sits within a broad open terrace, framed by grass, loungers, and shaded corners. It feels less like a formal resort pool and more like part of a private country house.
The VW Bar
Then there is the Volkswagen. A vintage VW van has been converted into an honesty bar beside the restaurant terrace, bringing a note of humour into the otherwise restrained setting. Guests help themselves to drinks, settle outside, and watch the light change across the estate. It is a small detail, but it says a great deal about Pé no Monte.
