A City Escape, Reimagined in the Countryside

When Lisbon natives Gonçalo and Helena traded the intensity of the city for the slow pulse of the Alentejo, they envisioned a place that captured the best of both worlds—the serenity of rural life infused with the style and comfort of urban sophistication. To bring that dream to life, they enlisted Ivan de Sousa and Ines Antunes of [i]da arquitectos, whose minimalist sensibilities and deep respect for place have transformed an old monte alentejano into a masterpiece of contemporary rural design.

Architecture That Honors the Land

At Pé no Monte, modern design doesn’t dominate the landscape—it listens to it. The original farmhouse, perched proudly on a gentle rise, remains the beating heart of the estate and serves as the owners’ home. Below it, seamlessly integrated into the rolling terrain, lies a low-slung, architectural extension that redefines what an Alentejan retreat can be. Approached along a winding dirt track, the new wing reveals itself gradually, a sleek silhouette of clean lines and whitewashed walls that open onto the vast, sun-drenched plains. Inside, spaces are airy and meditative, with floor-to-ceiling glass framing uninterrupted views of cork trees, olive groves, and endless sky. Every guest room has its own private terrace, inviting mornings with coffee and evenings under stars that seem to stretch forever.

Design for Living, Not Just Looking

The interiors echo the architecture’s quiet confidence—minimalist yet warm, modern yet unmistakably Alentejo. Pale woods, linen textures, and earthy tones blend effortlessly with polished concrete and brushed steel. Each room feels like a personal retreat, a space designed for slowing down, breathing deeply, and reconnecting with the landscape. Outside, the pool terrace unfolds onto a wide lawn dotted with sun loungers and shaded corners, while a children’s playground ensures families feel just as welcome as couples seeking calm. And then there’s the honesty bar, a touch of pure whimsy that captures the spirit of Pé no Monte: a vintage VW Beetle Van transformed into a cocktail station, parked right beside the restaurant terrace. It’s relaxed, joyful, and unmistakably original—a perfect emblem of this retreat’s playful sophistication.

The Art of Slowing Down

Meals at Pé no Monte follow the same philosophy: fresh, local, and unhurried. Breakfasts linger into late morning; dinners are intimate and grounded in seasonal produce. Between swims, siestas, and sunset drinks, time here seems to soften, stretching into the long, golden glow that defines the Alentejo.

DNA Hotels Verdict

Pé no Monte is what happens when architectural clarity meets rural soul—a modern escape that doesn’t just inhabit the Alentejo, but belongs to it. Every line, every texture, and every thoughtful detail is in conversation with the landscape. For travelers who crave design-led tranquility and the freedom to just be, Pé no Monte is a quiet revelation: a countryside retreat with the spirit of a city residence and the soul of the Alentejo sun.
