A Farm with a New Future
Pensão Agrícola is a place where history quietly continues. Originally built in 1920 as a wedding gift for the Silva Gomes family’s only daughter, the farmhouse remained an active agricultural property for decades before falling into disuse. Today, it has been lovingly restored as a small design retreat that preserves its rural identity while introducing a fresh architectural language rooted in simplicity and authenticity. Nothing feels recreated. Everything feels rediscovered.
Architecture That Respects the Land
The restoration by Atelier RUA is remarkably restrained. The original farmhouse remains at the heart of the property, its weathered stone walls, timber beams, and whitewashed façades carefully preserved. Three contemporary garden suites replace former agricultural outbuildings, creating a collection of intimate spaces connected by low walls, shaded courtyards, orchards, and gardens that feel entirely natural within the landscape. Old and new exist effortlessly together. Neither competing for attention.
Simple Rooms, Beautifully Composed
With just six rooms, every stay feels wonderfully personal. Three guestrooms occupy the original farmhouse, while three garden suites enjoy private terraces surrounded by mature trees. Natural linens, handcrafted textiles, salvaged furniture, vintage objects, polished concrete floors, and earthy materials create interiors that celebrate comfort through simplicity rather than excess. The atmosphere is quiet. The craftsmanship speaks for itself.
Living at the Algarve’s Pace
Life follows the rhythm of the countryside. Breakfast is served beneath the trees with fruit from the orchards, homemade preserves, local cheeses, and freshly baked bread. Days drift between the heated plunge pool, shaded terraces, and peaceful gardens, occasionally interrupted by a visit from the property’s friendly donkey, Ernesto. Every detail encourages guests to embrace a slower way of living. Luxury here isn’t scheduled. It unfolds naturally.
The Authentic Eastern Algarve
Perfectly positioned between Tavira, Cacela Velha, and the lagoons of the Ria Formosa, Pensão Agrícola offers access to a quieter Algarve of salt marshes, fishing villages, deserted beaches, and fertile countryside. It’s a region where agriculture, nature, and local traditions remain central to everyday life.
Why It Works
Pensão Agrícola succeeds because it never loses sight of its origins. Through sensitive restoration, honest architecture, and a deep respect for the surrounding landscape, it transforms a modest family farmhouse into one of Portugal’s most authentic rural retreats. Intimate, beautifully understated, and full of character, it captures the Algarve long before mass tourism arrived—and quietly reminds you why it still matters.
