Schgaguler Hotel

The DNA

Schgaguler Hotel, Kastelruth (Castelrotto), Italy
A Contemporary Alpine Landmark Where Peter Pichler Reimagines the Mountain Hotel

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● A remarkable transformation by Peter Pichler Architecture, replacing Alpine nostalgia with sculptural contemporary design while remaining deeply connected to the Dolomites.
● Beautifully restrained interiors where bespoke chestnut joinery, natural materials, and iconic design classics create a calm, sophisticated atmosphere.
● Family-owned for three generations, combining exceptional South Tyrolean hospitality with refined cuisine, wellness, and direct access to Alpe di Siusi.

A New Landmark for the Dolomites

In the historic village of Castelrotto, surrounded by the UNESCO-listed Dolomites, the Schgaguler Hotel confidently challenges expectations of the traditional mountain lodge. Commissioned by the Schgaguler family, Milan-based Peter Pichler Architecture transformed the former hotel into a striking contemporary landmark. The sculptural white façade, defined by sharp rooflines, generous glazing, and a rhythmic concrete grid, echoes the jagged geometry of the surrounding peaks while establishing an architectural identity entirely its own. It feels unmistakably Alpine, yet refreshingly modern.

Minimalism with Warmth

Behind the bold exterior lies an interior of remarkable calm. Chestnut wood, exposed concrete, smooth resin floors, and carefully crafted bespoke joinery create spaces that feel warm without relying on rustic clichés. Scandinavian simplicity, Italian elegance, and subtle Japanese influences come together in a palette of natural textures and muted colours, allowing daylight and mountain views to shape the atmosphere. Everything feels beautifully balanced. Nothing feels excessive.

Rooms Framed by the Mountains

The 42 guestrooms and suites continue the same restrained design language. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the interiors with natural light, while balconies frame uninterrupted views of the Sciliar Massif and surrounding peaks. Bespoke furnishings sit alongside celebrated design pieces, including Hans Wegner’s Wishbone Chair, Takeshi Nii’s NychairX, Monica Graffeo bathtubs, Angelo Mangiarotti washbasins, and lighting by Santiago Roqueta. The architecture never distracts. The landscape always remains present.

South Tyrol, Refined

The hotel’s philosophy extends naturally to its restaurant and wellness spaces. Chef Rosario Viscome combines Alpine traditions with Mediterranean finesse, celebrating local ingredients through contemporary interpretations of regional classics. Sandra Schgaguler’s carefully curated wine list highlights producers from Valle Isarco and Bolzano, while the spa continues the architectural language with local materials, indoor pools, saunas, a Melmarium mud bath, and treatments using South Tyrolean Vitalis Dr. Joseph products. Regional identity is everywhere. Luxury feels quietly authentic.

Four Seasons in the Dolomites

Schgaguler is perfectly positioned at the foot of Alpe di Siusi and close to Val Gardena. Winter brings direct access to one of Europe’s finest ski regions via the nearby shuttle, while warmer months invite hiking, cycling, and climbing across the dramatic Dolomite landscape. Throughout the year, Castelrotto offers a timeless backdrop of historic streets, mountain traditions, and extraordinary scenery. Adventure begins outside. Serenity awaits inside.

Why It Works

Schgaguler Hotel succeeds because it proves contemporary architecture can strengthen rather than diminish its Alpine setting. Peter Pichler’s sculptural intervention, exceptional material palette, and restrained interiors create one of the Dolomites’ most distinctive design hotels—one where modernism and mountain heritage exist in complete harmony.
