The Dolder Grand

The DNA

The Dolder Grand, Zürich, Switzerland
A Belle Époque Landmark Elevated by Contemporary Architecture and World-Class Art

Why DNA Hotels Loves It

● Norman Foster’s bold contemporary wings transform a nineteenth-century palace into one of Europe’s most striking examples of historic and modern architecture in dialogue.
● An exceptional art collection featuring works by Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Andy Warhol, and many others turns the hotel into a destination in its own right.
● Set high above Zürich, it combines panoramic Alpine views, Michelin-starred dining, and one of Switzerland’s finest spas within a true urban resort.

A Grand Hotel Reimagined

Since opening in 1899, The Dolder Grand has watched over Zürich from the wooded slopes of the Adlisberg. Its iconic Belle Époque palace, complete with towers and steep roofs, remains one of Switzerland’s most recognisable hotel buildings. The defining moment in its modern history came with Norman Foster’s ambitious renovation, which introduced two contemporary wings that embrace the historic structure rather than compete with it. Old and new never compete. They strengthen one another.

Architecture Meets Art

The Dolder Grand is as much a cultural destination as a luxury hotel. Throughout the building, an impressive collection of museum-quality artworks by artists including Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Max Ernst, Andy Warhol, and Takashi Murakami transforms corridors, lounges, and public spaces into an informal gallery. Contemporary architecture provides the perfect backdrop, allowing every work to breathe within generous, light-filled interiors. The hotel rewards curiosity. At every turn.

Rooms Above the City

The 175 guestrooms and suites occupy both the restored historic palace and Foster’s modern additions. Natural materials, limestone bathrooms, understated furnishings, generous proportions, and floor-to-ceiling glazing create interiors that place the emphasis firmly on the surrounding landscape. Many rooms overlook Lake Zürich, the city skyline, and the distant Alps, while the signature suites elevate the experience with extraordinary scale, private artworks, grand pianos, and individually designed interiors. Luxury feels effortless. Never excessive.

A Destination in Itself

The Dolder was conceived as a city resort, and it continues to excel in that role. The expansive spa combines thermal experiences, Japanese-inspired wellness rituals, snow rooms, saunas, and a spectacular swimming pool overlooking the mountains. Culinary experiences are equally impressive, from Heiko Nieder’s two-Michelin-starred restaurant to the more relaxed atmosphere of Saltz, while elegant bars and terraces encourage guests to slow down and stay awhile. There is little reason. To leave the hill.

Above Zürich, Close to Everything

Despite its tranquil forest setting, the hotel remains only minutes from the city centre. The historic Dolderbahn funicular connects the hotel with Zürich below, allowing guests to move effortlessly between peaceful woodland surroundings and the cultural life of the city. Few hotels offer such a convincing balance between urban energy and complete escape. It feels wonderfully secluded. Without ever feeling isolated.

Why It Works

The Dolder Grand succeeds because it refuses to choose between history and innovation. Norman Foster’s contemporary architecture enhances rather than overshadows the Belle Époque landmark, while exceptional art, thoughtful design, and extraordinary hospitality create a destination that is both grand hotel and cultural institution. It is one of Europe’s defining luxury hotels—and one of its most complete design experiences.
