The Prestige, Penang — Colonial Whimsy Meets Optical Illusions
A Victorian-inspired daydream reimagined for modern George Town

A Victorian Daydream on Malaysia’s Sunlit Isle

Penang, the sun-kissed island drifting off the north-west coast of the Malaysian peninsula, has long seduced travelers with its British colonial architecture, tropical greenery, and world-famous food culture. Rising from the heritage streets of George Town’s old quarter, The Prestige adds a new layer of allure. Architect KL Wong’s crisp white façade—arched, rhythmic, and respectfully in tune with the district’s fin-de-siècle urban footprint—opens into a mischievous world crafted by Singapore’s Ministry of Design. This is Victorian nostalgia and modern magic intertwined.

Design Sleight of Hand

Inside, The Prestige transforms classic colonial cues into a living stage of perception and illusion. Ministry of Design riffs off the magician-centric film The Prestige with optical tricks woven into every corridor and corner. Escher-like black-and-white floor tiles stretch the hallways into dizzying infinity. Art Deco chrome lattices shimmer across walls. Desks appear to float atop polished chrome spheres. Bathrooms hide behind seamless doors, waiting to be revealed. Alternating light and dark schemes animate the long guest corridors, while mechanical lights cast constantly shifting latticed shadows—a hypnotic procession guiding guests through the hotel.

A Heritage Footprint, Reimagined with Playfulness

While whimsy abounds, the design is rooted in George Town’s history. Patterns echo 19th-century floor motifs, while a vast bronze wall etches Penang scenes—botanical, historical, and architectural—into its reflective surface. Retail arcades pop in and out of sight, breaking up the building’s depth with moments of visual relief. The overall effect mirrors the island itself: tropical, storied, and full of delightful contradictions. This is Victorian heritage made light on its feet, glimmering with contemporary wit.

Rooms with Hidden Charms

Across 162 rooms—Deluxe, Premier Deluxe, Deluxe Trio, and the Duplex-style Loft Suite—design becomes a game of reveal and conceal. Champagne-bronze geometric frames act as spatial dividers, inspired by Houdini’s escape boxes. Bespoke vanity mirrors use polished brass and integrated lighting to create the illusion of floating frames. Hidden doors open onto tropical-bright bathrooms and surprise storage niches. The Loft Suite, with its downstairs lounge and mezzanine bedroom, feels like a refined Victorian greenhouse reinterpreted for the modern traveler—airy, intimate, and quietly theatrical.

A Conservatory of Light and Flavor

The hotel’s main restaurant, The Glasshouse, draws from the English Victorian conservatory—sunlit, spacious, and framed by intricate metal latticework. Real greenery mingles with botanical textiles, forming a tropical Eden indoors. Chef Shafiq Rizhar Rozali presents local flavors with playful modern twists: Nyonya Ulam Rice stacked with roasted chicken, salted egg, and crisp poppadum; Crispy Chicken Gochujang lacquered with honey-spiked heat; or contemporary comfort plates for global palates. Mirrors amplify light and open up the space, while wicker chairs and forest-green banquettes offer contrasting moods—garden calm or street-view vibrancy.

Drink, Lounge, and Wander

Dining extends beyond the Glasshouse. Cutter’s Lounge, reserved for Loft Suite guests, provides an exclusive retreat with all-day light bites and beverages. The Reserve pours inventive cocktails, wine, and spritzes—a stylish stop before exploring George Town’s historic heart. Downstairs, a Victorian dining-and-retail arcade creates a sense of wandering through a 19th-century street scene, complete with optical flourishes that blur perception.

Spa Serenity in a Tropical Setting

The Prestige’s wellness sanctuary is a haven of Malaysian healing traditions. Reflexology, Qi Gong–inspired breathing, and centuries-old natural therapies form the backbone of its treatment menu. In a softly lit, plant-lined environment, guests are encouraged to slow down, recalibrate, and find inner alignment—a quiet contrast to the hotel’s playful visual illusions.

Rooftop Magic Above George Town

Ascending to the top floor reveals one of the hotel’s most impressive tricks: a semi-outdoor rooftop world suspended above the Strait of Malacca. Here sits the Angier & Borden function room, the Olivia & Julia garden lounge with its elegant white gazebos, and the infinity-edge pool overlooking Church Street Pier. Boundaries are softened by lush greenery, giving swimmers privacy while offering panoramic sea views that glow at sunset. It’s pure, effortless spectacle.

A Gateway to George Town’s Storybook Streets

From The Prestige’s doorstep, guests step straight into George Town’s UNESCO-listed quarter—a tapestry of spice-scented alleyways, colonial mansions, shrines, shophouses, and street-food icons. The hotel’s blend of Victorian elegance and modern illusion echoes the city itself: historic yet forward-looking, ornate yet full of surprise. First-time visitors will find it an instant immersion into the city’s heart and soul.

DNA Hotels Verdict

The Prestige is Penang’s most imaginative interpretation of colonial heritage—a playful, design-driven blend of Victorian elegance, tropical ambiance, and optical magic. Every corridor, shadow, reflection, and hidden door contributes to an experience that surprises and delights. For travelers seeking a stay that is as inventive and captivating as the city it inhabits, The Prestige casts a spell that lingers long after check-out.
