An Industrial Icon Reimagined
Few hotels are as unconventional as THEKRANE. Standing above Copenhagen’s Nordhavn harbour, the former coal crane has been transformed by developer Klaus Kastbjerg and architect Mads Møller of Arcgency into an extraordinary architectural retreat. Rather than erasing the crane’s industrial identity, the project embraces it completely, allowing its history to define every aspect of the experience. The structure remains untouched. Its purpose has simply changed.
A Hotel Built Vertically
THEKRANE unfolds across four carefully conceived levels. The ground floor welcomes guests with a private reception, while above it sits the Glass Box meeting room suspended above the harbour. One floor higher, an intimate spa overlooks the water through floor-to-ceiling glazing. At the very top, the 50-square-metre KRANE ROOM occupies the former crane house, offering uninterrupted views across Copenhagen’s harbour and the Øresund. Each level feels distinct. Yet part of one architectural journey.
The Beauty of Black
Designed by Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen of Norm Architects, the penthouse embraces an uncompromising monochrome palette. Walls, ceilings, furniture, and cabinetry dissolve into shades of black inspired by the crane’s former cargo of coal. Rather than creating darkness, the restrained palette intensifies the surrounding landscape, transforming the enormous windows into constantly changing works of art shaped by shifting daylight, weather, and sea. Light becomes the decoration. The architecture quietly disappears.
Crafted with Extraordinary Precision
With colour deliberately absent, texture takes the leading role. Leather, timber, stone, steel, and handcrafted detailing create warmth within the minimalist composition. Bespoke furniture is integrated seamlessly into the architecture, while storage, the kitchenette, and bathroom disappear behind concealed black panels. Even the crane’s original operator’s cabin has been transformed into a secluded viewing room overlooking the harbour. Every element feels essential. Nothing feels unnecessary.
Architecture as Experience
THEKRANE offers far more than a place to spend the night. Private hosting, breakfast delivery, bicycles, an electric car, the tranquil spa, and the remarkable Glass Box meeting space all reinforce the sense of exclusivity.
