A Mountain Retreat Ahead of Its Time
At 1,500 metres above sea level on Monte San Vigilio, vigilius mountain resort can only be reached by a seven-minute cable-car journey. Completed in 2003, the hotel was the first hospitality project by South Tyrol-born architect Matteo Thun. Commissioned by Ulrich Ladurner, it introduced a quieter vision of Alpine luxury based on local materials, ecological responsibility, and complete immersion in nature. The ascent changes the pace. Silence begins before arrival.
Architecture That Follows the Land
The long, two-storey structure runs along the contours of the mountain rather than rising above them. Local larch, quartz stone, clay, and glass form a restrained material palette, while a continuous timber brise-soleil shades the façade and frames the surrounding panorama. Above, a grass-covered roof merges with the landscape and helps prevent overheating during warmer months. The building never dominates. Architecture becomes part of the slope.
Rooms Without Distraction
The 35 rooms and six suites face either the Dolomites or Val d’Ultimo. Solid birch and larch create warm, uncluttered interiors, deliberately free from decorative artwork so that the landscape remains the central focus. A tactile clay wall separates the sleeping and bathing areas, concealing radiant panels powered through heat-recovery and geothermal systems. Every room opens outward. Nature provides the composition.
Wellness Rooted in the Mountain
The Aquiléia Spa continues the same philosophy of simplicity and connection. A pool, enlarged sauna and steam areas, local treatments, and the rooftop Paradise Garden provide spaces for restoration without severing the relationship with the mountain. Even the traditional hay bath draws directly from South Tyrolean wellness culture. Nothing feels superfluous. Wellbeing feels elemental.
Local Flavours at 1,500 Metres
With no village streets or restaurants outside the door, dining becomes part of the retreat. Restaurant 1500 presents an evening tasting menu shaped by regional produce, while Stube Ida offers more informal South Tyrolean dishes. The cuisine reflects the same balance as the architecture: rooted in place, carefully considered, and free from unnecessary complication. The landscape enters the kitchen.
