Soho House Mumbai rises directly behind Juhu Beach, its relatively narrow 11-storey form giving the club a very different architecture from the converted townhouses, warehouses and country estates associated with many Soho House properties. Inside, the programme unfolds vertically. Guestrooms and private spaces are layered with restaurants, bars, lounges and a screening room, before the building finally opens to the sky at rooftop level. English House, Indian Hands

The interiors begin with the recognisable Soho House vocabulary of low lighting, patterned fabrics, timber, rugs, vintage-inspired furniture and rooms designed to feel accumulated rather than formally decorated. In Mumbai, that language is filtered through Indian craftsmanship. Polished teak, carved screens and hand-printed Rajasthani textiles sit alongside patterned wallpapers, velvet and richly coloured upholstery. The combination avoids turning either influence into a theme: the English country-house references provide familiarity, while Indian materials give the rooms their particular texture and warmth.

A Clubhouse Stacked Vertically

The limitations of the slender building become part of its character. Instead of spreading horizontally, different moods are distributed floor by floor, allowing the hotel to move between private retreat and highly social club. A library provides quieter territory, while the screening room introduces another layer of Mumbai culture through cinema. Deep upholstery and velvet give it an almost 1960s atmosphere, turning film-watching into a deliberately analogue experience within one of the world’s great filmmaking cities.

Rooms Above Juhu Beach

The guestrooms continue the residential approach, combining strong patterns, tactile fabrics and timber with a more intimate scale than the communal areas. Nothing is intended to feel overly polished. Furniture, art and textiles are layered to suggest a private home assembled over time rather than a conventional luxury hotel room. Soho House’s rules around phones and photography reinforce the sense that participation matters more than observation.

Soho House is built around a highly recognisable design formula, but its best houses are those where the city disrupts that formula.
