A design-led hotel doesn’t have to be created by a famous architect or interior designer—it can be carefully designed from the ground up or have evolved organically over decades. What matters is that everything feels connected: architecture, interiors, furniture, materials, light and atmosphere. These are hotels with a clear point of view, where design isn’t decoration or a marketing label, but part of the character of the place and the way you experience it.
Five years in the making, French property developer Pierre Beckerich’s model of full hotel service layered over Airbnb-type accommodation has opened March 2017. The YOOMA Urban Lodge is set between mini skyscrapers (including the unmissable 1970s Totem Tower) overlooking a busy riverside road in the 15th arrondissement of central Paris.

Located in the old town, it is a short meander away from the main square and other ecclesiastical sights such as the Holy Trinity Column. The hostel is set in a 17th-century horseshoe-shaped building of 1,000m2 (11,000 square feet) that was used for military purposes. Inside, the restored building shows original details combined with a mix of (mostly Czech) vintage furnishings and simple materials such as wood, metal and concrete.
